The American Federation of Teachers is suing federal student loan servicing company MOHELA for alleged “systemic failures” that have prevented some borrowers from receiving student debt forgiveness under a government program, among other alleged harms.

MOHELA, the Missouri Higher Education Loan Authority, is accused of violating the District of Columbia’s Consumer Protection Procedures Act by “creating unprecedented backlogs of borrower complaints” through “dysfunction and poor customer service,” according to the allegations in the complaint filed Monday in D.C. Superior Court.
