The U.S. Supreme Court on Wednesday shot down an attempt to block the Biden administration's aggressive new carbon reduction targets for power plants, though the  Environmental Protection Agency's rule could return to the justices before long.

The court rejected  emergency requests by a group of states and industry representatives to stop the EPA's recently announced requirement that power plants adopt carbon capture and sequestration/storage technologies, known as CSS. The EPA rule says CSS technology will allow coal-firing power plants to capture as much as 90% of their carbon emissions and store them underground.
