Oil and gas giants have cast what they say is the perfect U.S. Supreme Court case to bring an end to state climate change litigation—but the Biden administration is advising the justices not to take the bait.

With just over a month left before President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration, Biden-appointed U.S. Solicitor General Elizabeth Prelogar has urged the justices to turn down appeals from Exxon, Sunoco, Chevron and other companies seeking to put a stop to state court climate suits that threaten to cost Big Oil billions of dollars in damages.
