Walmart forced its army of more than 1 million gig-worker delivery drivers to receive their payments through accounts at the fintech Branch Messenger laden with junk fees, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau alleged in a lawsuit filed Monday.

Walmart opened the accounts without drivers' consent and would not let drivers access their pay until they accepted Branch Messenger's terms and conditions, according to the 60-page lawsuit filed in federal court in Minnesota. The CFPB says Walmart has mandated use of the Branch Messenger accounts since 2021, causing drivers collectively to rack up more than $10 million in junk fees.
