Companies may not use children's data for online targeted advertising unless parents opt in and agree to those uses, under the Federal Trade Commission’s updated rule implementing the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act.

The updated rules, finalized last Thursday, were among the final pieces of FTC rulemaking during Lina Khan’s tenure as commission chair. While the rules passed the commission unanimously, Republican Commissioner—now FTC Chair—Andrew Ferguson noted “serious problems” with the update in his concurring statement.
