The U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday reinstated a law requiring businesses around the country to disclose their owners to the federal government, with only Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson registering a dissent.

The high court granted the U.S. Department of Justice's request to pause, or “stay,” a lower court’s universal injunction on the disclosure requirements pending a challenge from an assortment of small businesses. The Supreme Court did not explain its reasoning for granting the stay, which is customary for the court’s emergency docket, sometimes referred to as its “shadow docket.”
