The start of the high court's term seems an appropriate time to reflect on what gives certain cases lasting significance. One that has stood the test of time is Gideon v. Wainwright , the famous ruling that established the right of indigent defendants to be represented by counsel in criminal cases. Gideon 's basic tenet is firmly planted in our pantheon of values. Whether we are prepared to apply that principle to alleged noncitizen enemy combatants is a question the court will decide this term.
