After three consecutive years of raising associate pay, many of Atlanta’s big firms have slammed on the brakes. Some have reduced or deferred annual raises, while others have frozen associates’ base compensation at 2008 levels as economic conditions continue to deteriorate. Only a few firms, including King & Spalding and Paul, Hastings, Janofsky & Walker, report that it’s business as usual, with associates getting their regular annual pay increase.

Alston & Bird and Kilpatrick Stockton are freezing compensation at last year’s levels. Bryan Cave-Powell Goldstein and Womble Carlyle Sandridge & Rice are freezing base compensation for now and telling associates they may get raises later in the year, while Sutherland is freezing base compensation and offering raises as a lump-sum performance bonus at year’s end.
