The seeds of the Boys & Girls Clubs of America were sown in 1860 by a group of women in Hartford, Conn. They established the first Boys Club to provide a positive environment for aimless city children. There now are more than 4,300 local clubs, and 50,000 full- and part-time employees work for the organization, approximately 400 of them at the national level.

Annual revenues for the nonprofit group, which is headquartered in Atlanta, are $1.5 billion. More than 95% of its income is funneled to the local affiliates. Each year, through membership and community outreach, the clubs seek to encourage 4.8 million children to reach their potential as productive, caring and responsible citizens. Notable alumni include former President Bill Clinton, Brad Pitt, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Michael Jordan and Neil Diamond.
