As GC of the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, Kristine Berry Morain is thrilled to be able to leave work every day and say to herself, "We helped almost 5 million kids." In a "unique setup," the clubs' legal arm is part of the organization's financial services department, Morain said. She leads what she called a "very small" legal team -- Morain is the only attorney. She keeps costs down by performing as much of the work as possible in-house, sending a mere 10 percent to outside counsel.

NATIONWIDE MOVEMENT
The seeds of the Boys & Girls Clubs of America were sown in 1860 by a group of women in Hartford, Conn. They established the first Boys Club to provide a positive environment for aimless city children. There now are more than 4,300 local clubs, and 50,000 full- and part-time employees work for the organization, approximately 400 of them at the national level.
