Gregory Craig was due for a pay cut when he became White House counsel. Now we know by how much: about 90%. The former Williams & Connolly partner is making $172,200 a year in his new job, down from the $1.7 million he reported in 2008, according to newly released White House records.

He’s making the same as other top officials, including David Axelrod and Rahm Emanuel, all of whom could earn more in the private sector. Craig brought with him two Williams & Connolly associates, who are now pulling down what would have been a first-year associate’s salary circa 2002. Jonathan Kravis and Christian Weideman, associate counsel to the president, are making $130,500, down from $220,000 and $310,000, respectively, last year.
