The auto industry is downshifting its lobbying operation.

General Motors — which spent more than $13 million on lobbying in 2008, including about $3 million on outside shops — terminated contracts with 10 outside lobbying firms in the second quarter, disclosure reports filed last week show. Ford Motor Co. (the only member of the Big Three not to take a federal bailout) dropped King & Spalding, which reported receiving $180,000 from Ford during the past year. Chrysler Group LLC’s lobbying lineup hasn’t changed yet, but it reports spending far less than 2007.
