When people ask about the scandal involving former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich in years to come, a wide swath of Chicago’s white-collar defense bar will be able to say they were there. At least 30 lawyers, including three former U.S. attorneys for the Northern District of Illinois, and some 20 law firms have signed on to represent Blagojevich, his five co-defendants and a growing list of potential witnesses, some of whom could become defendants themselves.
The legal firepower may surpass even that of the 2006 political corruption trial of ex-Gov. George Ryan, criminal defense lawyers suggest. And the list is likely to grow longer because the Chicago U.S. attorney’s office, led by Patrick Fitzgerald, hasn’t finished its investigation.
