Mercedes-Benz U.S. International Inc.is a $5.5 billion car and sport utility vehicle manufacturer. About 3,000 people work in its 3-million-square-foot factory in Tuscaloosa, Ala., Mercedes’ sole car manufacturing site in North America. As the only location in the world that produces Mercedes SUVs, the factory ships to 138 countries. Approximately 40% of its SUVs head overseas.

Workers can assemble as many as 200,000 vehicles annually, but the factory is operating “well under capacity,” said General Counsel Matt Kendrick. The parent company is Daimler A.G. in Stuttgart, Germany, which had global 2008 sales of more than $133 billion.
