Like two dogs with one juicy bone, the U.S. Depart­ment of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission are facing off over which agency will review Comcast Corp.’s $30 billion acquisition of majority ownership in NBC Universal Inc.

For most industries, it’s clear which agency has dibs to review a merger. But not the media industry, where both DOJ and FTC lawyers have reviewed major deals. “It should be a colossal clearance fight,” said one antitrust lawyer. The review will be high-profile and complex, since the two companies aren’t direct horizontal competitors but would instead integrate vertically.
