The Food and Drug Administration has been in the hot seat in recent years for serious, even deadly lapses in oversight. The Obama administration declared early on that the safety of food and drugs would be the FDA’s top priority. In March, President Barack Obama called it “one of the most fundamental responsibilities government has.”
