AMN Heathcare Services Inc. of San Diego is the country’s largest health care staffing company. It provides contract doctors, nurses and medical personnel to hospitals, medical practices, schools, military bases, veterans’ hospitals and health care organizations. AMN has about 4,000 workers on assignment at any given time.
Initially owned by a private equity group, AMN went public in 2001 and has grown from about 300 corporate employees with revenues of $231 million to about 1,400 employees and annual revenue of $1.22 billion by 2008. A tiny segment of its businesses involves recruiting experienced nurses from Australia and the United Kingdom to work in U.S. hospitals for up to two years.
