Re “Getting gun history right” [NLJ, March 1]: The author would make a good magician in Vegas: “Don’t look at my right hand, look at my left.” The focus is not on the historical context of the 14th Amendment; it is on the historical context of the Second Amendment. The Bill of Rights is just that. It restricts the power of the government over individuals and the states. There simply is no reason why the “incorporation” doctrine should apply to some, but not all, of the amendments insisted upon by the “liberals” of the day.
