Las Vegas Sands Corp. operates and develops gambling resorts. Its namesake Sands Hotel was one of the first major casinos and hotels on the Las Vegas Strip and the site in 1960 of the first gathering of the “Rat Pack” — Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Joey Bishop, Peter Lawford and Sammy Davis Jr. The hotel was demolished in 1996 and replaced by the Venetian Resort Hotel-Casino, a 4,000-suite hotel with a 120,000 square-foot gambling room. Additional Sands properties include The Palazzo Resort Hotel-Casino, The Venezia Hotel and The Sands Expo and Convention Center, all in Las Vegas; the Sands Casino Resort Bethlehem in Bethlehem, Pa.; Sands China Ltd., a majority-owned subsidiary traded on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange; The Sands Macao; The Venetian Macao Resort Hotel; and the Four Seasons Hotel Macao. Under development is the Marina Bay Sands in Singapore, scheduled to open in April.

Sands reported annual revenue of $4 billion and has 25,000 employees. It laid off 10% of its work force because of the recession, although none in the legal department. In fact, General Counsel Alberto Gonzalez-Pita said, the “demand for legal services went up” because of the recession.
