When DLA Piper set out to court Anastasia Kelly, the former general counsel at American International Group Inc., it had existing ties to call on. Then the firm threw in a persuasive meal at a top Washington steakhouse. “They took me out to dinner and sat me down and said, ‘Look, we think you’d have a lot of fun at DLA,’ ” she said.
Kelly left the troubled AIG on Dec. 30, after a public dispute over compensation issues. About a month ago, she had dinner at J&G Steakhouse with Charles Scheeler, a Washington partner; Lee Miller, the firm’s joint chief executive officer; and Francis Burch, the global chairman. She had worked with Scheeler during her tenure at AIG and her stint as general counsel at MCI/WorldCom. Kelly and Burch are on the board of nonprofit Equal Justice Works. She also briefly consulted for DLA in 2006, between the MCI/WorldCom and AIG jobs.
