NEW YORK — The city government has settled a class action over routine strip-searches at Rikers Island and other jails in the city for people arrested for misdemeanor drug and weapons charges.

The city agreed on March 16 to pay $33 million to settle all claims made by the plaintiffs, including two women who said that they were subjected to forced gynecological exams in city jails.
