Appellate practices are already highly specialized, but in a string of cases involving big banks sued in state courts, Arnold & Porter appears to be developing a niche within a niche.

During the past two years, the Washington firm has logged three major appellate victories for big financial institutions by effectively arguing that state banking laws are pre-empted by federal statute. Arnold & Porter lawyers have filed amicus briefs in three other cases, and several more pre-emption cases are in the pipeline, the firm says.
