The furtive White House interviews have begun in President Barack Obama’s search for a nominee to replace U.S. Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens. According to the Associated Press, Judge Sidney Thomas of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit traveled from Billings, Mont., for an Oval Office chat with the president on April 29. Thomas, said to be a favorite of new White House Counsel Robert Bauer, is still regarded as a long shot behind Solicitor General Elena Kagan and appeals judges Diane Wood and Merrick Garland.
