Armstrong World Industries Inc. is a leading designer and manufacturer of floors, ceilings and cabinets for commercial and residential use that dates to 1860. It began in the cork business, soon becoming the world’s largest supplier, expanding to supply linoleum, corkboard and fiberboard. Based in Lancaster, Pa., the company operates 36 plants in nine countries. The recession forced the layoff of 10% of the company’s employees and the shuttering of some plants. Armstrong has approximately 10,600 employees worldwide, and revenues for 2009 approached $2.8 billion. It occupies the No. 628 slot on the Fortune 1,000 list.
