The Talbots Inc. is a retailer of women’s apparel, shoes and accessories. Founded in 1947 with a single store in Hingham, Mass., Talbots now operates 580 stores in 46 states, the District of Columbia and Canada. Talbots reported 2009 revenues of more than $1.2 billion and has about 9,100 employees.

Starting in 2007, Talbots underwent a restructuring that by April of this year had resulted in a merger with BPW Acquisition Corp., a publicly traded shell company based in Delaware. It made $330 million in the deal and borrowed another $200 million to repurchase 29.9 million shares held by its former Japanese majority stockholder, Aeon Inc., and repay debt to Aeon of about $486 million.
