Republic Services Inc. started out as an oil company and, after a stockholder rebellion and subsequent corporate maneuvering, emerged in 1989 as a waste-management firm. Today, the company combines nonhazardous-waste recycling with solid-waste collection, transfer and disposal throughout the United States and Puerto Rico. It owns or operates more than 400 collection companies, 240 transfer stations, 78 recycling centers and 210 solid-waste landfills. The company serves commercial and industrial customers and has contracts with more than 3,000 municipalities for residential services.

Republic has approximately 31,000 employees and reported sales of nearly $8.2 billion during 2009, an increase of 122% compared to 2008. Revenues during the first quarter of 2010 were almost $1.96 billion. The boost in revenues was due to its acquisition in late 2008 of Allied Waste Industries Inc. The merger positioned it as No. 2 in the waste-handling industry, after industry leader Waste Management Inc. The Phoenix-based company is ranked No. 278 on the Fortune 500.
