Outside of “big box” venues such as Wal-Mart Stores Inc., K-Mart and Target Corp., Dollar General Corp. is the largest retailer of discount goods in the country. Headquartered outside of Nashville in Goodlettsville, Tenn., the company has 80,000 employees in 35 states. Dollar General operates 9,000 stores and is growing by about 600 stores per year. The chain offers mostly no-frills general merchandise and consumables, with about two-thirds of its stock dedicated to everyday items purchased on a recurrent basis. “We offer everyday low prices on the basic stuff people need,” said General Counsel Susan Lanigan.

About 25% of Dollar General’s merchandise is priced at a dollar or less. Catering to single-income families and those on fixed incomes, Dollar General has benefited from a recent spike in conscientious shoppers. Throughout a period of prolonged misfortune for the country, Dollar General has been in the “right place at the right time,” she said. “We have had a couple of really strong years.”
