A law department’s core competencies are those few areas of legal work that most directly and specifically support the company’s distinctive strengths. Other definitions and nuances might be raised, but that one gets to the essence: the most important output of the company’s legal team.

Core competencies, to be more specific, stress what lawyers, paralegals and others produce, not their individual or collective attributes. It is not a core competency to be smart or friendly or creative. Nor is it to be a team player, store knowledge or skillfully bring employees onboard. What counts as core are the fruits of those attributes, such as contracts signed, asset purchase agreements finalized, patents granted and securities filings completed. A core competency, therefore, has to do with what tasks the department accomplishes, with what priorities and for what reasons.
