Group 1 Automotive Inc. is an auto retailer headquartered in Houston that went public in 1997. It owns and operates more than 120 franchise dealership and 22 repair centers in the United States, as well as 10 franchises and two repair centers in the United Kingdom. Sales in 2009 surpassed $4.5 billion. The company employs about 7,400 people, having lost 10% of its work force to the recession — due to attrition, not layoffs, according to General Counsel Darryl Burman. (The law department lost no jobs.)
