NEW YORK — A federal judge has claimed authority to block a major jeweler from proceeding with individual arbitrations while plaintiffs appeal the denial of class certification in a gender discrimination case.
Citing “a blatant exercise of gamesmanship,” U.S. District Judge Jed Rakoff said he has the authority to enjoin Sterling Jewelers Inc. and the American Arbitration Association from launching arbitrations involving 46 individual claimants while the parties prepare for arguments before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 2d Circuit.
