Kate Duchene is the chief legal officer for Resources Global Professionals LLC, an international consulting firm that provides advice about corporate finance, accounting, strategic communications, legal and other areas. The company distinguishes itself by its “inside out” approach through all levels of the enterprise. Founded in 1996 as a division of Deloitte & Touche LLP, the Irvine, Calif.-based firm employs more than 2,800 people; clients include 80 of the Fortune 100. The firm lost 20% of its work force during the recession, including one attorney. The corporate parent is Resources Connection Inc. RGP took in revenue of about $500 million in 2010.

LEGAL TEAM AND OUTSIDE COUNSEL

Duchene heads a team of six lawyers, three paralegals and two support staff. She strives to handle as much of the work in-house as possible. “We only turn to an outside-counsel firm for significant deals, specific or geographic knowledge or trial expertise,” she said. “When we need help resolving an issue outside our legal department, we hire a lawyer — not necessarily a firm. I believe lawyering is still a profession with a lot of art involved.”
