Established in 1978, Brookdale Senior Living Inc. has become the largest owner and operator of communities for senior citizens in the United States. Options for its residents include independent living and personalized assisted living, and the company offers memory and dementia care. Brookdale provides rehabilitation services, skilled nursing, fitness and educational programming.
Brookdale is an outgrowth of the large, hotellike, primarily urban retirement communities that sprang up during the 1970s. It has 38,000 full- and part-time employees, and is headquartered in Brentwood, Tenn., outside Nashville. Brookdale most recently reported $2.2 billion in revenues, securing for it the No. 916 slot on the Fortune 1,000.
