Johnson Controls Inc. is a diversified technology firm with business in more than 150 countries. The company’s sweet spot is creating and refining alternative energy technology for cars and buildings. Its products include batteries for hybrid and electric vehicles. The firm dates to 1885, with the invention of the first electric room thermostat. Its headquarters is in Milwaukee.

According to General Counsel Jerome Okarma, Johnson Controls is increasingly focused on the development of electric management systems that improve efficiency throughout automobiles. He said it will take one, maybe two, decades before electric cars become the rule, although rising gas prices could hasten the change.
