Electric vehicles have been a hot topic of conversation between the auto industry and the energy industry for many years. The changeover to electric vehicles by Americans will present a seismic shift for this country.
Commercial-scale electric vehicles were first delivered to customers in the United States in late 2010, and the auto industry and utilities are cautiously optimistic. Americans spent about $325 billion on gasoline in 2009, and utilities are anxious to tap into a market of that size. But before utilities can start capitalizing on this new market opportunity, they will have to address two significant issues: how to set appropriate electric-vehicle charging rates and receive the necessary state regulatory approvals; and how to recover costs related to any upgrades or new infrastructure to support the presence of electric vehicles on the grid.
