Zimmer Holdings Inc. designs and markets more than 100,000 orthopedic products and, according to General Counsel Chad Phipps, “we all have parents and grandparents getting them.” The self-described “world leader in musculoskeletal health” produces implants used in knee- and hip-replacement surgery, dental implant systems, spinal stabilizers, tourniquets and trauma equipment such as plates, screws and pins. Anticipating the sales potential of aluminum splints, founder Justin Zimmer established the company in his basement in 1926. Still based in Warsaw, Ind., but now operating in more than 25 countries, it directly employs about 8,000 people plus an independent sales force.

Zimmer is ranked No. 501 on the Fortune 1,000 list, having achieved “a little more” than $4.2 billion in 2010 sales.
