National Life Group is a collection of financial service companies that offer life insurance, annuities and investment products to individuals, families and businesses. The flagship National Life Insurance Co., along with Sentinel Investments, Equity Services Inc. and National Retirement Plan Advisors, is based in Montpelier, Vt. Its Life Insurance Co. of the Southwest subsidiary is located in Dallas.
National Life was founded in 1848 as one of the first mutual life insurance companies in the United States. It has insured Civil War soldiers, Gold Rush prospectors, Titanic passengers, Spanish influenza victims and veterans of international conflicts. Company revenues for 2010 were $1.74 billion, placing it at No. 628 on the Fortune 1,000. The company employs approximately 900 people.
