Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld senior counsel J. Thomas Schieffer has been appointed by Major League Baseball commissioner Bud Selig to oversee the Los Angeles Dodgers. Selig invoked the “best interests of baseball” to take control of the team away from owner Frank McCourt, who has been struggling with financial difficulties stemming from a divorce battle.

DEUTSCHE BANK SUED

The federal government sued Deutsche Bank A.G., saying the bank committed fraud and padded its pockets with undeserved income as it repeatedly lied in order to benefit from a ­government program that insured ­mortgages. A civil complaint seeks more than $1 billion in trebled damages under the False Claims Act.
