In 2001, Gregory Joseph was the head of litigation at Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson, with about 200 lawyers under his charge. But often when he attempted to bring on new clients, he found he had to turn down work to avoid conflicts of interest.

Joseph Law Offices, which has grown to about 15 attorneys in the decade since, representing high-profile clients such as Citigroup Inc. and riding a wave of business in the wake of the financial scandals of 2008. “We started representing Citi in August of 2007, when the credit crisis hit,” Joseph said. “It was involved in a series of multimillion-dollar leveraged loan transactions that became uneconomic because of the credit crisis, became difficult to fund and raised a series of legal issues.”
