Amerigroup Corp.’s goal is “to be a different kind of health insurance company — a company that does well by doing good,” as the company puts it in the mission statement posted on its Web site.

Or, according to General Counsel Nicholas Pace, the company has undertaken a “unique social mission” to serve the needy — more than 1.9 million senior citizens, children, the poor, the blind or disabled. It does so by coordinating services for individuals in publicly funded health care programs. Among those plans are Medicaid, the Children’s Health Insurance Program, Medicare’s long-term care program, Medicare Advantage and the Medicare Part D prescription-drug benefit.
