KATYAL MAY HAVE PICK OF APPELLATE JOBS

Neal Katyal’s job search is underway, and former acting Solicitor General Walter Dellinger said “the demand for Neal will be great” among top-tier firms. Katyal, 41, was acting SG between the time of Elena Kagan’s nomination to the Supreme Court last year and Donald Verrilli’s installation as SG June 9. Dellinger, an appellate partner at O’Melveny & Myers, said Katyal will catch the wave of major firms adding appellate practices. “There seem to be far more firms seeking appellate and Supreme Court advocates than there are lawyers who fit that profile. Several major New York firms, for example, are actively looking for a top appellate practice leader,” Dellinger said. The fact that Katyal is the only SG to have argued at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit may also be a plus for intellectual property-oriented firms. Katyal could be a big-ticket hire. When former SG Paul Clement left office in 2008, King & Spalding offered him a rumored $5 million hiring package. Come to think of it, with Clement gone, King & Spalding might have an opening. Katyal declined comment. — Tony Mauro
