The probe into whether former U.S. Rep. Rick Renzi (R-Ariz.) traded a vote for his own benefit falls outside the Constitution’s speech or debate clause, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit ruled. The shield around legislative acts does not “make Members of Congress super-citizens, immune from criminal responsibility,” it said.
Wrongful convictions for violent crimes in Illinois have cost taxpayers more than $214 million since 1989, according to a study by the Center on Wrongful Convictions at Northwestern University School of Law and Chicago’s Better Government Association. Those wrongful convictions resulted in people later proven innocent spending more than 900 years in prison.
