Aon Corp. provides risk-management, insurance and reinsurance services, as well as human resource consulting and outsourcing, for customers including businesses, individuals and governments around the world. Founder W. Clement Stone started in 1918 at his mother’s insurance agency in Chicago and branched out on his own the next year, eventually going national.

Aon posted revenues of $8.5 billion in 2010 and employs about 60,000 people in more than 120 countries. It is ranked No. 286 on the Fortune 500. The name, adopted in 1987, is an Irish word that the company translates as “oneness.”
