The 5.8-magnitude earthquake that shook the East Coast last week only briefly rattled the nerves of attorneys at Washington law firms. Building evacuations closed the courts and sent hundreds of workers home early, but, by and large, law firms bounced right back.

Shainis & Peltzman’s Stephen Leckar said he mingled with the crowd outside for a half-hour until his building reopened. “Just another fun day at the same-old-same-old,” he said. The lights flickered at Hogan Lovells, but co-CEO J. Warren Gorrell Jr. said people were back at work within an hour. Same went for Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld, which was “back up to full operation” within 40 minutes, according to Cathleen Connelly, the firm’s director of administration.
