Lawyers in the litigation against Toyota Motor Corp. over sudden, unintended acceleration are butting heads over which case should be a bellwether trial — and when.

The earliest date on which Toyota could face a jury is April 2012. But that schedule, offered by Los Angeles County, Calif., Superior Court Judge Anthony Mohr on Sept. 30, remained far from certain.
