Trinity Health is one of the largest nonprofit health systems in the United States, operating 47 acute-care hospitals, 401 outpatient centers, 26 long-term care facilities and numerous hospice programs and senior living centers in the Midwest, the West and Maryland, and providing health care training and consulting services abroad. The company, which is affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church, employs 64,000 people and reported 2010 revenues of $8.5 billion. Headquarters is in Novi, Mich., but Trinity announced in October that in 2012 it would consolidate operations in Livonia, Mich.; both cities are suburbs of Detroit. According to General Counsel Paul Neumann, Trinity takes its religious affiliation seriously, providing more than $455 million during the 2010 fiscal year to programs serving the poor.
Neumann oversees a staff of 59, including 37 lawyers. When hiring attorneys, he looks for experience in health care law and, to the extent possible, understanding of the health care industry. He tries to handle most work in-house, but uses outside counsel for “unusual items,” including arranging new affiliations and divestitures, responding to government investigations, litigation and for such specialty work as immigration matters, intellectual property and bond issues.
