Leggett & Platt revolutionized the mattress in 1885 when inventor J.P. Leggett and manufacturer C.B. Platt (Leggett’s future brother-in-law) patented the spiral coil bedspring. Today, the company designs and manufactures an array of wire, mattresses, furnishings and fixtures for the home and office, both under its own name and as a supplier to other manufacturers. It does a brisk line of business in automotive seating.

Corporate headquarters is in Carthage, Mo., and the company maintains 140 facilities in 18 countries. Leggett & Platt employs 19,000 people, and 2010 sales of $3.4 billion positioned the company at No. 607 on the Fortune 1,000.
