The Blackstone Group L.P. is an “alternative asset manager” — it places assets in nontraditional financial products, not simply stocks or bonds — and an investor in companies in a variety of industries.
Blackstone operates from 22 offices around the world, handling investments for clients including public pension funds and academic and charitable institutions in private-equity funds, commercial real estate, hedge funds, credit platforms and customized investments. It provides investment advice and management services. Assets under its management exceed $150 billion, and the value of its combined portfolio would place Blackstone at No. 7 on the Fortune 1,000. Its most recent total annual revenues were $3.1 billion. The New York-based company was established with $400,000 in seed capital in 1985 and employs approximately 1,500 people.
