Joel Ario, 58, will join Manatt, Phelps & Phillips in Washington as a managing director of Manatt Health Solutions, the firm’s lobbying arm, effective on Jan. 1. Previously, he served as director of the Office of Health Insurance Exchanges in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. He earned his J.D. from Harvard Law School.
Steptoe & Johnson LLP has added two professionals in the environmental practice group’s food safety practice in Washington. Mitchell Cheeseman, 49, joins the firm as a managing director. Previously, he served as the acting director of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Office of Food Additive Safety. He earned his doctorate in chemistry from the University of Florida. Ralph Simmons, 59, joins the firm as a partner. Previously, he was a senior policy analyst who served as Cheeseman’s senior adviser at the FDA. He earned his J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law.
