Originally called the United States Enrichment Corp., Congress created USEC Inc. in 1992 to take over uranium enrichment from the U.S. Department of Energy and to privatize the process. Today it is a leading supplier of enriched uranium fuel (containing a higher concentration of a fissionable uranium isotope than occurs naturally) and services for commercial nuclear plants.

USEC operates the only U.S-owned uranium enrichment plant in the United States, in Paducah, Ky. It supplies more than half of the United States’ market and more than one-quarter of the world market for nuclear fuel. Additionally, the company plays a role in nuclear disarmament, converting Russian nuclear payloads into fuel, and operates a nuclear centrifuge research facility in Piketon, Ohio. It provides consulting services to plant operators and transports nuclear fuel.
