Former Solicitor General Paul Clement is on track to set a modern-day record for the most U.S. Supreme Court arguments in a single term as a private practitioner. A partner at the Bancroft appellate boutique since April, Clement has argued twice this fall and has two routine cases set for spring.

Throw in three hot-button arguments in the coming months — health care, Texas redistricting and the Arizona immigration case the Court granted on Dec. 12 — and that makes seven by May. “Particularly impressive and extremely taxing, given the size of his firm,” says Sidley Austin veteran Carter Phillips. Phillips has maxed at six in a term, as did mentor Rex Lee.
